Crypto

The word “Cryptography” brings up kind of mixed feelings in me; it’s been a year I finished my engineering and I guess it’s been more than 1 n half years since I had attended the last Cryptography class.

Crypto was different from the rest of the lectures because it used to be the first class at 7.30 in the morning and that too taken by none other than but our HOD. Crypto, being an elective paper was taken up by a bunch of friends from different engineering disciplines and that was the only class we did together (or tried to do) officially and in the process the series of events that relates to it.

You get an amazing feeling when u spend some time recollecting old memories… those back benches where you always plan to start your day only to be called to the front rows , after getting caught dozing. Those symmetric and asymmetric keys algorithm, those RSA’s and DES… those Hash functions… and God knows what…..

Time flies, before we knew anything it was the time for our first internals. When you ask a final year old about internals he’ll laugh n go away… at that point of life living under the purple haze as we were in , the internals didn’t count much, and that too it was the first with 2 to follow. But somehow for Crypto again the rules were made different, and we decided to give it a shot. We sat up and studied or whatever the entire night… and since crypto was the last exam of the block, the small party that always happened after the internals, was in the process of being planned… the stage was set .. Crypto exam from 9.45 to 11.15 then again back to land we belonged, with peace, floydian music and green grass.

I got to the exam hall at 9.35 but couldn’t find anyone I knew would be writing the exam with me. 5 minutes went by then again no signs whatsoever… I smelled something wrong…

9.55 … we were in our favorite ‘aamir bhai ka tuphrey’ … with chai and cigarette as company. The exam was scheduled from 7.30 in the morning and it went over at 9, and none of us had any clue about that. It was again the same bunch of people who used to spend a lot of time together, blaming one another on their lack of information and about all the last night’s effort going down the drain. But disappointment hardly happened to us…

The party got preponed…. and in a shabby room in a southern state in India, Jimi Hendrix, Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, The Doors …took turns to play their music.

It was only this morning in some ‘knowledge transfer’ session, I chanced upon the word Cryptography… and what memories did it bring forth…
Stuck in front of a monitor the entire day long, the college days seem like movies in true colors.

Looking back at those days and trying hard, to avoid the present taste of reality.
